NYOS – National Youth Orchestras of Scotland
Applications for the NYOS Classical Orchestra Courses are now closed and will open again in August 2020.
Since 1979, the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland (NYOS) has been providing young instrumentalists in Scotland with unforgettable training and performance experiences. Today, NYOS has more opportunities than ever before for keen young musicians.

Just complete one application form to be considered for all NYOS classical orchestras. Following your application, you will be invited to audition. If successful at the audition stage, you will be offered a place in a specific NYOS ensemble.
There are two audition methods open to all applicants. Candidates can submit a recorded audition or, subject to demand, NYOS will hold auditions in Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, and London.
Please note that due to audition venue accessibility, live Harp and Percussion auditions will only be held in Glasgow, or alternatively a recorded audition can be submitted.
Eligibility
You are eligible to apply to the National Youth Orchestras of Scotland if you are aged between 8-25 years old, are Scottish, and/or have Scottish links i.e.
- Live in Scotland
- Study in Scotland
- Have family ties in Scotland but live elsewhere
NYOS accepts applications from all standard orchestral instruments including concert pedal harp.
Our orchestra guidelines for the appropriate standard are as follows:
NYOS Junior Orchestra (aged 8 and over): ABRSM Grade 5
NYOS Senior Orchestra (aged 12 and over): ABRSM Grade 7
NYOS Symphony Orchestra (aged 25 and under): ABRSM Grade 8
(Qualification is a guide only and not essential)
